Herman Miller is famous for the attention to detail they bring to creating an ergonomic office chair, but where did their story begin? Herman Miller was an entrepreneur from Michigan who assisted his son in law, D.J. De Pree, with the purchase of the Michigan Star Furniture Company in 1923. De Pree had been working for the company as an office clerk since 1909 and must’ve sensed opportunity.
And he was right, because by the middle of the 20th century, Herman Miller was already synonymous with innovative furniture and office chairs. By working with legendary designers like George Nelson and Charles and Ray Eames, Herman Miller was able to create pieces that are now widely considered to be industrial design classics.
