Embody began with the recognition of a previously unsolved problem: the lack of physical harmony between people and their technology. Spending too much time interacting with our various devices, moving nothing but our fingers, can make us stiff and tired because our bodies are made to move. With Embody, designers Bill Stumpf and Jeff Weber set out to solve this problem.
What sets the Embody apart
Durable materials. Form celebrates function. No compromise.
A new benchmark
So intelligent, sitting in it actually helps you think
More than 20 physicians and PhDs in the fields of biomechanics, vision, physical therapy, and ergonomics contributed their expertise to help guide the development of this chair. As a result, Embody has set a new benchmark for pressure distribution, natural alignment, and support for healthy movement in ergonomic seating.
You feel Embody’s Pixelated Support the moment you sit down—a sense that you are floating, yet perfectly balanced. Thanks to a dynamic matrix of pixels, Embody’s seat and back surfaces automatically conform to your body’s micro-movements, distributing your weight evenly as you sit. This reduces pressure and encourages movement, both of which are essential in maintaining healthy circulation and focus.
Designers Stumpf & Weber
The result of decades of painstaking design research
What if a chair could do more than just minimize the negative effects of sitting? That was the radical idea that Jeff Weber and the late Bill Stumpf had when they started their work on the Embody.
Could they design a chair that actually had positive effects on the body? “You can’t design without empathy,” said Weber, who also designed our Caper chair. “Since design has become more technology based, we’ve had to sit in our chairs in front of computers for longer periods, just like everyone else. We identify with the problems people have as a result of sitting.”
Frame
The chair’s heart, made from aluminum and a special composite that keeps your back in motion. Comes in either graphite or white.
Backrest and seat pan
The Embody’s backrest is designed like a human’s, with a central spine and adjustable ribs. This gives the Embody a unique biomechanical look and provides a pixelated support that can be finely tuned to the exact contours of your back. The seat pan is upholstered with suspension material that gives the chair its box spring feeling. Embody is the perfect choice for professionals that spend many hours at their desks.
Additional back support
The Backfit adjustment allows you to position the backrest in line with your spine’s natural curve, so you achieve a neutral, balanced posture. Once the chair is tuned to fit you, the backrest adapts to your movement, adjusting automatically to your shifting positions.
Tilting mechanism
This essential part of the chair provides perfect balance. Combined with the split seat pan, the Embody is able to perfectly follow your movement which make its effortless to find the right seating position.
Base
The Embody’s base is an important part of its appearance and comes in four different finishes: graphite, white, polished aluminum and a titanium color. Use the LoyalBrand configurator to see the difference in appearance these options provide.
Wheels
The Embody is fitted with wheels that are compatible with either hard floors or carpet. Wheels with a braking system (for when the chair is not in use) are also available.
The Herman Miller Embody was designed to alleviate soreness and back pains. Your body was made to move, yet you spend a lot of time doing the opposite during office hours. This can cause soreness, fatigue and more serious issues in your neck and back. The Herman Miller Embody was designed to support your body and to allow for a degree of movement in order to target these issues directly.
